GCL

GCL is a leading UK groundworks and reinforced concrete frame specialist, headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, celebrating 25 years of delivering complex projects safely across multiple sites.

The induction was a PowerPoint in the canteen. It consumed site time, varied from site to site, and produced no evidence of understanding. That mattered doubly, because a large share of GCL's skilled workforce does not speak English as a first language. A presentation delivered in English to a Polish-speaking steel fixer is not an induction. It is a formality.

GCL used LUMA1 to rebuild the induction as short, scenario-based interactive video: electrical safety, working at height, hazard identification, PPE. Each module mirrors situations workers actually face and checks understanding as it goes. Every module is available in the worker's preferred language, including Polish, Romanian and Lithuanian. Workers complete it on their own phone via QR code, at their own pace, before they reach the gate.

Assessment data showed measurably improved understanding of site safety and hazard identification, and for the first time GCL could see exactly who understood what, in any language. Induction validity is tracked per contractor, so a worker trains once within the set period rather than at every gate, unless something critical changes. Gaps are visible per worker, so further training goes where it is needed instead of everywhere. The canteen PowerPoint is gone.
