Galliford Try is one of the UK's leading construction groups. Its Infrastructure business delivers major highways and environment projects nationwide, with health, safety and environment at the centre of how it operates.

In 2022, Galliford Try and National Highways ran a Big Idea competition with some of the biggest names in UK construction, searching for innovation worth backing. Over 150 entrants. Six finalists. Three winners, and LUMA1 was one of them. The first challenge was the HSE induction, delivered as a live monthly Teams session. Scheduling every new starter into a fixed slot slowed people down before they had begun, and a live presentation left no record of what anyone had actually understood.

LUMA1 turned the monthly session into an interactive, on-demand induction. Available on any device, in the worker's own language, with checks that prove understanding rather than attendance, and simple to update the moment a policy or org chart changes. Then the work grew. Toolbox talks. Skills training. And now the most ambitious chapter: digitising Galliford Try's own standards as short video, with fast-paced openers to earn attention and the company's own subject matter experts delivering the substance to camera. The standard becomes something a worker watches, understands, and is tested on.

What began as a competition win is now embedded in how Galliford Try Infrastructure briefs, trains and proves the readiness of its people. Hundreds of new starters have passed through the digital HSE induction since launch, with thousands of hours saved against the monthly live sessions it replaced, and engagement and knowledge retention tracked in real time so the programme improves with every cohort.

Single sign-on with Galliford Try's internal systems, so learners access LUMA1 through the tools they already use. Contingent workers served alongside direct employees.
